BERKELEY, CA
A city upon (the edge of) a hill.
Basswood, 11.5″ × 11.5″
Elevation contours spaced at 50 meters.
I like this city. I tried to pack in as much detail and charm as I could: parks, landmarks, paths, bike trails, picnic spots, transit lines—
I got almost all the city parks. Can you see them all?
The University of California’s first campus is here, with all the paths that connect different parts of campus. I represented Memorial Stadium topographically as a half-contour dip with the details of the stadium interior engraved.
The Berkeley Marina is a particularly special place, with the yacht harbor from which sailors have departed to cross the Pacific, César Chávez Park reclaimed from a landfill, and the South Sailing Basin a safe place to learn to sail before venturing into the rough San Francisco Bay.
The Claremont!
In real life, the borders of a city can be hard to see. Berkeley blurs into Oakland to the south, Kensington & El Cerrito to the north, and Albany to the west. But it was important that this map is focused on the city of Berkeley and Berkeley specifically. So I marked the edges by dropping the opacity of non-Berkeley areas, with the exception of the wild areas of Contra Costa County that border Berkeley to the north and contain so many interesting parks and trails.
